Announcing the Tapestry Rewoven project!

Four years ago I was at the gym (specifically, on the Lat Pull-Down machine) listening to You’ve Got a Friend from Carole King’s legendary recording, Tapestry. From out of nowhere the phrase “Tapestry Rewoven” came into my head. At first I thought about singing this tune, which I had never done. As I continued my workout I realized that the phrase meant something much more—that I could approach the entire album and re-imagine it from a jazz sensibility. Was it possible—the entire recording?

The idea excited me musically and emotionally. For women of my generation, Tapestry was more than just a great album. It was virtually our religion. Just about every co-ed at Penn State (my alma mater) had a copy of the album. We awoke to it, we went to sleep to it, we cut class to it. To this day, You’ve Got a Friend is the anthem for the friendship I share with my college roommate, Barb. With all that reverence, I didn’t want to do anything that might disgrace the recording, I thought. But once the idea had made itself known, I couldn’t shake it.

I brought the idea to my longtime collaborator and arranger, Daryl Kojak and we began to explore the territory. Daryl outdid himself time after time. We wanted to be sure that in our zeal for bringing something new to this recording, we would be honoring it in the process. We worked for several years and in some cases we ended up with multiple treatments for a track. A few months ago, we knew we had it.

We are thrilled to announce that we are now in pre-production with Tapestry Rewoven. This will be the first time Tapestry is re-imagined in its entirety by an individual vocalist. And we would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in the project in a meaningful way.

Tapestry Rewoven is a self-produced project—common practice in today’s music industry. To reach our goals, we’re joining the cutting edge of CD production, where the fans join in the process of making it happen. By contributing to the production, participants get to go inside the process of creating the recording in some truly exciting ways.

Please consider joining us in helping to create Tapestry Rewoven. What follows is a complete rundown of the various participation levels and what each brings you. Some are truly great and some are out-of-this-world incredible. We hope you find them as meaningful and fun as we intended. The levels of participation include: Bronze ($100-$299); Silver ($300-$599); Gold ($600-$1,499); Platinum ($1,500-$4,999); Diamond ($5,000-$14,999); and Benefactor ($15,000+). Please read on for the details for each level and how to join up.

Bronze Level ($100-$299)

Tapestry Rewoven Rewoven! I’m really excited about this one. You, or any person you choose, will come into the studio during the production of the recording, pick any completed track from Tapestry Rewoven and have at it! Make your own vocal recording to the track of your choice. Sing lead or background—you choose. We’ll record it and provide you with twenty-five copies to share with your friends and family. Truly become a part of the fabric!
